In this session we will discuss the safety policies that pertain to working in areas where you could be exposed to hazardous chemicals or materials. You might want to give extra attention to this one. It could save your life. Here we go!</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>Everyone must be trained to understand the Hazard Communication Program. It’s also known as the “Right to Know” program. “Right to Know” refers to a program requiring employers to inform employees of known chemical hazards found in the work place. You as an FSG employee, have the right to know about the potentially hazardous products that you may come in contact with, or be exposed to, in the work place.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>So FSG has developed its own specific written Hazard Communication Program, addressing the Hazardous Chemical Requirements. What does this mean? Well, Employees should receive training in the details of the written HazCom Program. It will include at least the following: The location of the written HazCom Program and MSDS book. The location in their work areas, where hazardous chemicals may be present. Ways to detect the presence, or release, of a hazardous chemical The health hazards of the chemicals. And the actions and procedures they must take to protect themselves from a hazardous chemical release. Any time a new chemical is introduced to the work area, the training must be repeated. The Safety Risk Manager conducts an evaluation of the written HazCom Program at least annually and at some point during a project. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>During this evaluation the SRM will refer to the Material Safety Data Sheets, (or MSDS). He will use the most current MSDS that’s been made available by the manufactures at that time. He will be relying on the chemical manufactures to do their due diligence in providing accurate and up to date information. A master copy of MSDS should be maintained at the branch office. Material Safety Data Sheets on projects should address the specific hazards of that project. It must be made readily available to each employee associated with that project. These books are not only specific to projects, but can also be specific to: Service Technicians Tool rooms Shop areas Long-term service sites and so on. The jobsite’s Competent Person is responsible for maintaining the jobsite HAZCOM Manual and making sure that all employees on site are aware of it, and making sure they know when new sheets are added.</textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>Close Well, that about wraps up Hazard Communications. This topic really makes me think about just how dangerous our business can be. I hope you think about that too. Why? Well, we have a saying at FSG. “We want you to go home each day in the same condition you arrived - healthy!” I’ll see you in the next session. </textformat></html><html><textformat leading='1' tabstops='[48, 96]' leftmargin='0' indent='0'>7.<tab></tab>Hazard Communication (HazCOM) This section applies to all Company work sites where exposure to a hazardous chemical or materials during normal working conditions, non-routine tasks or during an emergency situation is possible. 7.1.<tab></tab>All personnel must be trained to understand the Hazard Communication or “Right to Know” Program. “Right to Know” refers to a program requiring employers to inform employees of known chemical hazards found in the work place. Employees have the right to know about the potentially hazardous products used in the work place. 7.2.<tab></tab>FSG has developed its own specific written Hazard Communication Program addressing the Hazardous Chemical Requirements. 7.3.<tab></tab>The Safety Officer (SO) should conduct an evaluation of the written Hazard Communication Program at least annually or during the extent of the project. 7.4.<tab></tab>The most current Material Safety Data Sheets available should be utilized. 7.5.<tab></tab>FSG will rely on the evaluation performed by the chemical manufacturers who originates the MSDS for accuracy. 7.6.<tab></tab>A master set of MSDS documents should be maintained at the main office: 5115 Steadmont, Houston, Texas 77040. Each Branch should post a copy at their location. 7.7.<tab></tab>MSDS’s for a specific project should be established, maintained and made available to employees involved with the project. Such compilations can be unique to the project, e.g. sets for Service Technicians on vehicles, tool rooms, shop areas, long-term service site, etc. The Competent Person is responsible for maintaining the jobsite HAZCOM Manual and making employees on site aware of new MSDS’s. 7.8.<tab></tab>Employees should receive the following information and training: 7.8.1.<tab></tab>The requirements and details of the written Hazard Communication Program; 7.8.2.<tab></tab>Location of operations in their work area where hazardous chemicals are present; 7.8.3.<tab></tab>The location and availability of the written Hazard Communication Program and MSDS’s; 7.8.4.<tab></tab>Methods and observations that must be used to detect the presence or release of a hazardous chemical in the work area; 7.8.5.<tab></tab>Physical and health hazards of the chemicals in their work area; 7.8.6.<tab></tab>Measures taken to protect them from these hazards including any specific control procedures implemented to protect from exposure As new chemicals are introduced to the work area, repeat the training above. 7.9.<tab></tab>References: 7.9.1.<tab></tab>OSHA 1910.1200 7.9.2.<tab></tab>OSHA 1926.59</textformat></html>
